Over 400 students participate in the various ensembles that North Allegheny has to offer. These include, but are not limited to, the North Allegheny Intermediate High School (NAI) Concert Band, the NAI Symphonic Band, the NAI Wind Ensemble, the North Allegheny Senior High School (NASH) Concert Band, the NASH Symphonic Band, the NASH Honors Wind Ensemble, the “Tiger” Marching Band, the NA Colorguard, the NA Majorette Squad, the NA Dance Team, the NA Banner Carriers and Mascots, Jazz Ensembles I, II, and III, the Indoor Percussion Ensemble and Winter Guard. All of these groups have been recognized both locally and nationally for their outstanding effort and abilities.
The North Allegheny High School Marching Band is a truly remarkable organization. This band has been thrilling and entertaining audiences for over 35 years. The North Allegheny Marching Band is an integral part of the North Allegheny School District and the surrounding communities. The “Tiger” Marching Band regularly appears at all high school football games, local and national festivals, local and national parades, as well as various community events. The Marching Band has also appeared at Steelers’ football games, Pirates’ baseball games, and almost every major event in the area. Such performances range from the opening of the airport and other public buildings and roadways, to local and national rallies, celebrations and conventions held in the Pittsburgh vicinity. During the summer of 1992, the band members performed in Madrid for the “American Musical Salute to Spain” commemorating 500 years since Christopher Columbus landed in America. They were also part of the World Expo ’92 in Seville.
In May of 1996, The North Allegheny Marching Band secured its place in history by breaking the world record for the longest music march. The new world record of 50.12 miles in 24.49 hours was included in the 1998 printing of The Guinness Book of World Records. Appearances for the Marching Band have included: The Tournament of Roses Parade, the Orange Bowl and Parade, the Sugar Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, the Outback Bowl, the Alamo Bowl, the Peach Bowl and Parade among many others. In addition, the Marching Band has been a featured performer at Disney World and Epcot Center eleven times. In February of 2006, the Marching Band was honored to be the lead band in the Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl XL victory parade, and in 2009 was selected to perform at the 56th Inaugural Parade in Washington D.C., and at the Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup Championship Parade in June. The “Tiger” Marching Band regularly marches in both the City of Pittsburgh Labor Day and Veteran’s Day Parades and has annually received top honors at these events. The band and auxiliary units have received many “superior” ratings and first place awards at national events, parades, and music festivals.
The concert groups at North Allegheny have also enjoyed a multitude of success over the past years. The NAI Wind Ensemble has appeared at the Pennsylvania Music Educator’s Association (PMEA) large group adjudications; the NAI and the NASH Wind Ensembles annually appear at national music festivals throughout the country that have included the Three Rivers Music Showcase, the Peach Bowl Concert Band Adjudication, the North American Music Festivals, Festival Disney, the Youngstown State University Concert Band Clinic, and the Performing Arts Consultants “Windy City Classic.” In 2008 and 2010, the NASH Honors Wind Ensemble was named “Best Classical Group” in the High School Division of the 31st and 33rd Annual Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards, respectively. This Ensemble was also selected to perform at the PMEA All State In-service Conference in 2009, 2011, and again for this school year. In 2010, both the NASH Honors Wind Ensemble and the NA Jazz Ensemble I were selected to perform at the NAfME All-Eastern Division Conference in Baltimore, MD. The NASH Symphonic Band and Concert Band have also regularly appeared at national music festivals including the Three Rivers Music Showcase, the North American Music Festivals, Festival Disney, Fiesta-Val Music Festivals, and the Performing Arts Consultants “Windy City Classic”. Jazz Ensembles I, II, and III have performed at many regional and local jazz festivals such as the Slippery Rock University Jazz Festival, the Edinboro University Jazz Festival, and the WDUQ Winter Jazz Festival. The bands have also appeared at national music festivals including the Peach Bowl Jazz Ensemble Adjudication, North American Music Festival, Festival Disney, Fiesta-Val Music Festivals, and the Performing Arts Consultants “Windy City Classic. “ The Percussion Ensembles, Colorguard, Dance Team, and Majorette Squad have also performed at prestigious events and festivals around the country including the North American Music Festival, Festival Disney, Fiesta-Val Music Festivals, and the Performing Arts Consultants “Windy City Classic.”
